A printer driver is a piece of software that enables communication and data exchange between a printer and a computer. Once installed, it enables the computer to communicate with the printer in order to produce output. Printer drivers provide information to the computer about the capabilities of a specific printer model, such as the number and types of paper trays, the types of media it can support, and which types of ink or toner cartridges it requires.
Printer drivers are usually packaged with the printer itself and can be installed directly from the manufacturer's website. Some operating systems, such as Windows and macOS, come with basic printer drivers for a variety of different printers. In addition, Windows offers its own driver store, where you can download additional drivers for different printers.
In order for a printer to function properly, the printer must be linked to a compatible printer driver. While most modern printers use a universal printer language like PCL or PostScript, some older models may require a specific model-specific driver. In addition, some printers may require additional drivers to support various features, such as duplex printing, color printing, or media types other than plain paper.
In addition to the actual driver, a printer's driver may also include maintenance utilities. These utilities can be used to check printer status, view error logs, run diagnostics tests, perform maintenance tasks such as cleaning the printer, and for some models, configure or update firmware.
When installing a new printer, or updating an existing one, always make sure to install the appropriate driver. Installing an incorrect driver can lead to compatibility issues, configuration errors, and undesired printer behavior.
